Lake Como, Italy
George Clooney, really Clooney? What's he got to do with Lake Como?
Ah! Well ..
Charming and breathtakingly scenic glacial lake at the foothills of Alps where George Clooney feels at home, can be YOUR home for a day or a week or a month... or you can just settle here “wink”!!
The famous Lake Como is in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. The most famous town is Bellagio which is at the center of “Y” shaped Lake Como. The small town with cobblestone alleyways has vegan & vegetarian friendly restaurants overlooking the lake. There are exceptional villas, luxurious hotels & boutiques spread out in the Bellagio village. Villa Melzi garden & the one and only main street Via Giuseppe Garibaldi demands a leisurely stroll. Via Giuseppe Garibaldi takes you to the tip, Punta Spartivento in 10 minutes. Once you are here, you don’t want to leave.
Many charming villages surround the upside “Y” shaped lake. that the lake surrounds it. Most visited ones are Bellagio, Lecco & Varenna.
Summer is the most popular time to visit this region. I would suggest staying there for couple to a few days but if you are pressed for time, you can easily take a day trip from Milan. It's about one-hour train ride to reach one of the towns. There are three railway lines that connect Lake Como from Milano Centrale or from Milan Airport, Malpensa. Check out the routes which suits your duration and town/s you want to visit.
There are private boats for charter, boat tours as well as commuter ferry which goes up and down the lake. The private boats are optimal to visit your choice of towns at your pace, especially if you are just visiting for a day. You even get a choice of boat like classic, luxurious, 2 people, with or without drinks & snacks. The tours are good as well. Serves the purpose without breaking the bank, but of course with bit less flexibility as they only run on their scheduled routes.
There are great restaurants overlooking the lake in each town where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the gorgeous views while sipping Italian wine and relish the aromatic delicious food.
One thing for sure is that the views at every corner are absolutely breathtaking. The cute and charming villages you would just don’t want to get away from.
The city of Como is at the southern end of Lake Como. Famous for its waterfront promenade, the gothic Cathedral & Scenic funicular railway in the nearby town of Brunate are the main attractions.
