Inland Croatia -
BREATHE - MEDITATE - GET INSPIRED - REPEAT
- Where waterfalls dance and nature enchants.
When I first stumbled upon the pictures of Plitvice Lakes National Park with gazillion waterfalls few years back, that was my biggest pull to get to Croatia. Well, I made it, yay! I got a real treat and ended up exploring the area for more days than I initially thought of.
Alright, imagine a place where Mama Nature decided to show off her arts and crafts skills. That's Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia! It's like she got a bit carried away with watercolors and created a masterpiece of lakes, waterfalls, and lush greenery.
So, if you're a fan of aquatic acrobatics and want your mind blown by Nature's waterworks, Plitvice is your front-row ticket to the greatest waterfall show on Earth. It's like Cirque du Soleil, but with more water and less spandex mixed with abundant breathtaking views you will never forget.
16 lakes playing a game of connect-the-dots with waterfalls. They're not just any waterfalls, we're talking about Veliki Slap, the Beyoncé of waterfalls – majestic, powerful, and stealing the show.
There are multiple routes aka programs in the park that you can follow to be able to see the most. They are all good but pick what suits you the best. The combination is walk, hike, boat, bus, walk and repeat if you are up for it.
Be aware of the crowds. They are much, much more than you can imagine. Especially summertime. Plan for early morning slots and which entrance you would like to start from.
Let’s not forget about the lakes – they're like the dance floor for these waterfalls. Lakes changing colors like they're at a rave, and waterfalls performing choreographed routines. If Plitvice Lakes National Park were a Broadway musical, the waterfalls would be the tap-dancing stars.
Here's the kicker – you can't just casually stroll through. No, no. You've got to follow the rules. Stay on the paths, don't disturb the wildlife, and no cannonballs into the lakes no matter how tempted you are :)
To explore this natural wonderland, they've laid down fancy wooden boardwalks and hiking trails. It's like the VIP section of nature walks, guiding you through forests, over wooden bridges, and giving you front-row seats to the lakes' water ballet.
But wait, there's more! Underground caves, karst formations, and even a UNESCO World Heritage Site title. It's like the Oscars of nature – Plitvice is the Meryl Streep of national parks.
And for the pictures, you won't be able to stop even after you clicked many postcard perfect pictures. And you can see what length people go to take their perfect pictures.
There are small villages around where you can stay for a couple of days to explore Plitvice lakes and surroundings.
Rastoke is a picturesque village in Croatia, located near the town of Slunj in the Karlovac County.
The natural beauty of Rastoke is enhanced by its lush greenery, wooded surroundings, and the crystal-clear waters of the rivers. The combination of waterfalls, rapids, and charming wooden houses creates a fairy-tale-like atmosphere.
If Mother Nature did a Tinder profile, Rastoke would be her profile picture. And don't be surprised if you catch the river whispering sweet nothings to the watermills. It's a love story that's been flowing for centuries. So, if you're tired of regular old villages and want a date with waterfalls and history, Rastoke is your match made in Croatian heaven.
It is so unique to see houses built over waterfalls all around. Stay a night if time permits.
