Blue Hole New Jersey ...
and you won't believe how this beauty was created! Read on ..
Located in Cumberland County by Manumuskin River Preserve is the bluest, clearest and most beautiful Turquoise water in the state. It’s accessible by easy trail through the woods. The trail is easy but finding it is a bit tricky. There are three holes/lakes and around 5 miles loop. The bigger round lake is about 100 ft deep at the deepest point. The water is cooler in summer about 60 degrees F.
The extraordinary blue color is from the Sulfur from the mines that were existed not too long ago. Did I tell you it's not natural lake but a manmade water hole from abandoned mining quarries?
Very secluded lake is accessible only by foot from Schooner landing road. Park & start walking on a bit scary looking road which gets better as you keep walking on the gravel road parallel to the railroad tracks. In about 1.5 miles, you will see the first lake on the right-hand side.
Swimming in the lake is illegal & dangerous because of the temperature & sharp drop of bottomless abyss and quicksand. Accidental drownings are more common than not. Still the locals do go there for swimming on hot summer days to cool off as there is no enforcement for swimming present at any time.
The legend has it that “Jersey Devil” is active in that area...BOO
